- Description:
- The software company kit is an integrated application for small software
- companies. It's main function is the processing of orders. An order comes in
- from a customer. You enter the information into the Software Company Kit.
- The Kit then prints a receipt, makes the disks, and prints the disk labels,
- mailing label, and return address label for the diskette mailer. The Kit
- maintains relational databases of your customers, sales, and products.
- Functions are provided for working with the databases. The Kit also allows
- you to make disks, edit and print labels, and edit and print documents.
- Additional features include DIZ file management, and a disk calculator that
- fits files on disks.

- Installing:
- 1. Create a directory for the Kit.
- 2. Copy the Kit archive (.ZIP or .EXE file) to your Kit directory.
- 3. Unpack the Kit archive (use Pkunzip for .ZIP archives or run the
- archive for .EXE archives).

- Differences between the registered and unregistered versions:
- * The unregistered version will only handle one product.
- * The registered version will handle an unlimited number of products. It
- also comes with free unlimited tech support, master disks, upgrade
- notice, and an upgrade discount.

- Running:
- 1. Change to your Software Company Kit directory.
- 2. Enter "softkit" at the DOS prompt.
- 3. The first time you run softkit, you'll be asked for information about
- your company. Enter the information for your company. See "Setup Menu"
- for information on printer commands.
- 4. The title screen will appear. Press a mouse button to continue.
- 5. If you are running the unregistered version, a message to that effect
- will appear.
- 6. The main menu will then appear.

- Main menu:
- The main menu allows you to access the various features of the Software
- Company Kit. Menu options are as follows:
- Process order - Processes an order. Enter the customer's last name. If
- there is an existing customer by that name, you'll be
- shown their name and address. Select yes if thats the
- customer, otherwise select no. If no existing customer is
- selected, you'll be prompted to enter the customer's
- information. Next you'll get to edit the customer's
- information before its added to the database. Select an
- item to change its value. Select "Notes..." to edit the
- notes on this customer. Select Done when done. The
- customer will then be added to the database of customers.
- Next you'll enter the sale information. Then you'll get to
- edit the sale information before its saved to disk. Next a
- receipt will be printed. Then the labels for the disks and
- mailer. Then the disks will be made.
- Note:
- If you're using the same printer for paper and labels,
- the Kit will remind you to load paper or labels before
- printing.
- Customers... - Takes you to the customers menu.
- Sales... - Takes you to the sales menu.
- Products... - Takes you to the products menu.
- Make disks - Allows you to make a set of disks for a product. Select a
- product. Then select a media size. The Kit will then run
- the batch commands to make the disks for the product.
- Printouts... - Takes you to the printouts menu.
- Labels... - Takes you to the labels menu.
- DIZ files... - Takes you to the DIZ files menu.
- Disk calculator... - Takes you to the disk calculator menu.
- Setup... - Takes you to the setup menu.
- Help... - Takes you to the help menu.
- Quit - Quits to dos. If you are running the unregistered version,
- a message to that effect will appear. An order form will
- then appear. Once you've placed your order (please
- register!), press escape to exit to dos.

- Customers menu:
- The Customers menu allows you to work with your database of customers.
- Menu options are as follows:
- Add - Adds a customer to the database of customers. You'll be prompted to
- enter the customer's information. Then you'll be allowed to edit
- what you just entered. Make any changes necessary and select Done.
- The customer will then be added to the database.
- View - Allows you to view the customers in the database. Press 1 to view
- the next customer, or 2 to view the previous customer. Press N to
- view the notes on this customer. Press escape to exit.
- Edit - Allows you to edit a customer's information. Select the customer to
- edit from a list. You will then be allowed to edit the customer's
- information. Select an item to change its value. Select "Notes..."
- to edit the notes on this customer. Select Done when done. When you
- change a customer's name in the customer database, the Kit
- automatically changes the customer's name in the sales database for
- you.
- Search - Lets you search the database for information. First, enter the
- text to find. Pressing return cancels. Next, Select the field
- to search. Select "Search all fields" to search all fields.
- Select "Cancel" to cancel. Next, select whether you want to
- show matching records on the screen or printer. Selecting
- "Cancel" cancels. The Kit will then search the database for
- matching records. Matching records will be displayed or printed,
- depending on what you selected.
- Sort - Lets you sort the database. Select the field to sort on ("Cancel"
- cancels). Then choose a sort order, forward (A-Z) or reverse (Z-A.
- "Cancel" cancels.). The kit will then sort the database on the
- field you selected in the order you selected.
- Delete - Lets you delete a customer you select. A menu of customers will
- appear. Select the customer to delete, or select Cancel to
- cancel. When you delete a customer, the Kit automatically
- deletes that customer's sales from the sales database, and the
- notes on the customer.
- Print record - Prints the information for a customer you select.
- Print database - Prints information for all customers.
- Help... - Takes you to the help menu.
- Done - Returns you to the main menu.

- Sales menu:
- The sales menu allows you to work with your database of sales.
- Menu options are as follows:

- Products menu:
- The products menu allows you to work with the database of products
- produced by your company. Menu options are as follows:
- Add - Lets you add a new product. First you'll be prompted for name and
- price. Next an editor appears to allow you to create the batch file
- for making 5.25" disks for this product. A sample batch file will be
- created for you to edit. Enter the batch commands to make a
- set of 5.25" disks for this product. You'll start in the softkit
- directory when the batch file is run. The Kit automatically returns
- to its directory after running batch files. Press escape when done
- editing. You'll be given an option to save the file. Select Yes.
- Now you'll enter the batch commands for making 3.5" disks. The
- editor will appear again with another sample batch file. Enter the
- commands for making 3.5" disks. Press escape when done, and save.
- Next you'll get to enter the labels for the 5.25" disks. Begin by
- entering the number of disk labels for this product. Next enter the
- 1st label. Select on a line to change the line. Select Done when
- done. If there is more than 1 disk label, the editor will appear
- again for label 2 etc. until all labels are entered. You will now
- enter the labels for the 3.5" disks. As with the 5.25" disks, you'll
- be prompted for the number of labels, and then you'll be allowed to
- enter each label.
- Note: If you're running the unregistered version, you may only
- add one product. Attempts to add a second product will make a
- message appear telling you the unregistered version can only handle
- one product.
- View - Lets you view the information for all products.
- Edit - Lets you edit a product you select. Select a product from the menu.
- The product's information will be shown. Select an item to change
- its value. Select Done when done. Select 5.25 batch file... to edit
- the batch commands for making 5.25" disks. Select 3.5 batch file...
- to edit the batch commands for making 3.5" disks. Select 5.25
- labels... to edit the labels for product's 5.25" disks. Select 3.5
- labels... to edit the labels for product's 3.5" disks. Selecting
- Help... takes you to the help menu.
- When editing labels, Select a line to change the line. Select
- Next label to edit the next label for the product. Select Previous
- label to edit the previous label for the product. Selecting Help...
- takes you to the help menu. Select Done when done.
- When you change the name of a product in the products database,
- the Kit automatically changes the product's name in the sales and
- labels databases for you.
- Search - Lets you search the database for information. First, enter the
- text to find. Pressing return cancels. Next, Select the field
- to search. Select "Search all fields" to search all fields.
- Select "Cancel" to cancel. Next, select whether you want to

- Printouts menu:
- The printouts menu lets you create, edit, and print doc files. Menu
- options are as follows:
- New - Lets you create a new doc file. Enter the name for the new file.
- The editor will then appear. Edit the new file. Press escape when
- done editing. You'll be given the option to save.
- Edit - Lets you edit an existing doc file that you select.
- Print - Lets you print a doc file you select. You'll be prompted for the
- number of copies to print.
- Done - Returns you to the main menu.

- Labels menu:
- The labels menu lets you edit and print labels. Menu options are as
- follows:
- Print company address labels - Prints return address labels for your
- company. You'll be prompted for the number
- of labels to print.
- Print product labels - Prints sets of disk labels for a product you
- select. You'll be prompted for the number of sets
- of labels to print.
- Label editor - Runs the label editor.
- Label feed - Advances the labels in the label printer by a number of
- labels that you enter.
- Print customer label - Prints a mailing label for a customer you select.
- Help... - Takes you to the help menu.
- Done - Returns you to the main menu.

- Label editor:
- The label editor lets you edit a label. Select a line to change the line.
- Other label editor options are as follows:
- New - Creates a new label whose name you enter.
- Load - Loads a label from disk. You select the label from a menu.
- Save - Saves the label currently being edited.
- Save as - Renames then saves.
- Print - Prints the currently loaded label. You'll be prompted for the
- number of copies to print.
- Rename - Renames the label to a name you enter.
- Help... - Takes you to the help menu.
- Done - Exits the editor and returns you to the labels menu.

- Reports menu:
- The reports menu allows you to display reports of values needed for filing
- state sales taxes. Menu options are as follows:
- Total sales - Displays your total sales for a given time period. You enter
- the start and end dates for the reporting period. The Kit
- then displays your total sales during the period.
- Exempt sales - As Total sales, but displays total tax exempt sales for
- the period you enter. The state name and state abbreviation
- of your company's address is used as the non-exempt state.
- Non exempt sales - As total sales, but displays total taxable sales for
- the period you enter. The state name and state
- abbreviation of your company's address is used as the
- non-exempt state.
- Help... - Takes you to the help menu.
- Done - Returns you to the main menu.

- DIZ files menu:
- The DIZ files menu lets you create, edit, and delete FILE_ID.DIZ files,
- and FILE_ID.DIZ files to archives. Menu options are as follows:
- Description - Shows a description of the FILE_ID.DIZ file format.
- Create - Lets you create a new DIZ file. Enter the name (1-8 letters) for
- the new DIZ file. You will then be allowed to edit the new DIZ
- file.
- Edit - Lets you edit an existing DIZ file. Select the DIZ file to edit
- from a menu. Then edit the DIZ file.
- Add to zip - Adds a copy of a DIZ file to a ZIP file. Select the DIZ file,
- then select the ZIP file. The Software Company Kit then
- copies the DIZ file to FILE_ID.DIZ, and then adds FILE_ID.DIZ
- to the ZIP file.
- Print - Prints a DIZ file you select.
- Delete - Deletes a DIZ file you select.
- Help... - Takes you to the help menu.
- Done - Returns you to the main menu.

- Disk calculator menu...
- The disk calculator figures out what files go on which disks to use the
- least number of disks. You create lists of files, and the disk calculator
- figures out which files should go on which disks for all disk sizes. Options
- on the disk calculator menu are as follows:
- Create file list - Lets you create a new list of files to be put on disks.
- Enter the name for the new list (1-8 letters). You will
- then be allowed to edit the new list. List the files
- you want to put on disk. Use complete drive, path, and
- filename with extension. List one file per line. Press
- escape to exit the editor. Save the new list. The
- disk calculator will then calculate the results for
- all 4 common disk sizes.
- Edit file list - Lets you edit an existing file list. Select the file list
- to edit. Make changes using the editor. Press escape to
- exit the editor. Save your changes. The disk calculator
- will then calculate the results for all 4 common disk
- sizes.
- View results - Lets you view results for a file list. Select the file
- list. Then select a disk size. The results are shown in the
- editor. Press escape to exit the editor.
- Print results - Prints the results for a file list. Select the file list.
- Then select a disk size. The results will then be sent to
- the paper printer.
- Delete file list - Deletes a file list you select. Results for the file
- list are deleted too.
- Help... - Takes you to the help menu.
- Done - Returns you to the main menu.

- Setup menu:
- The setup menu allows you to configure the Kit for your company and PC.
- Menu options are as follows:
- Company name - Lets you enter your company's name. This is used on
- receipts and return address labels.
- Company address... - Makes the company address menu appear. The company's
- address is used for receipts and return address
- labels.
- Edit receipt - Lets you edit the text printed at the end of receipts.
- Make any changes you want, then press escape to exit the
- editor. You'll be given the option to save.
- Paper printer - Lets you select what printer to use for paper printing
- (receipts, docs, database printouts, etc.). You select
- the printer from a menu. If you select the same printer
- for both paper and labels, the Kit will automatically
- prompt you to load either paper or labels before it
- prints.
- Label printer - Lets you select what printer to use for label printing
- (mailing, disk, and return address labels, etc.). You
- select the printer from a menu. If you select the same
- printer for both paper and labels, the Kit will
- automatically prompt you to load either paper or labels
- before it prints.
- Paper printer commands - Lets you select commands for the paper printer.
- Commands are used to get darker printing. Options
- are: Epson/IBM, HP, None, and Custom. Custom
- allows you to enter commands for emphasized and
- doublestrike printing. You can enter escape
- sequences, special characters, and/or strings.
- Label printer commands - Lets you select commands for the label printer.
- Commands are used to get darker printing. Options

- sequences, special characters, and/or strings.
- Editor - Lets you use your favorite editor instead of the built-in editor.
- Enter the command to run your editor (ie "edit" to run dos edit).
- Pressing enter without entering a command makes the Kit use the
- built-in editor. Whatever you select as your editor will be used
- when the kit uses an editor. Editors are used to edit: batch
- files for products, notes on customers, the receipt, and
- printouts.
- Zip command - Lets you enter the command to run PKZIP. This command
- is used to add FILE_ID.DIZ files to ZIP files.
- Text color - Lets you change the color used for text in the Kit. You
- select a new color from a menu of colors.
- Text shadow color - Lets you change the color used for text shadows in the
- Kit. You select a new color from a menu of colors.
- Menu color - Lets you change the color of menus, messages, etc. in the
- Kit. You select a new color from a menu of colors.
- Title color - Lets you change the color used for titles in the Kit. You
- select a new color from a menu of colors.
- Title shadow color - Lets you change the color used for title shadows in
- the Kit. You select a new color from a menu of
- colors.
- Help... - Takes you to the help menu.
- Done - Returns you to the main menu.

- Help menu:
- The help menu allows you to access the online documentation for the Kit,
- along with support and other information. Menu options area as follows:
- Online help - Runs the Help Viewer to show the online documentation for
- the Software Company Kit.
- Support - Runs the Help Viewer to show the support information (forums,
- phone #'s, email addresses, etc.) for the Kit.
- Catalog - Runs the Help Viewer to show the Rockland Software Productions
- Catalog.
- Order form - Runs the Help Viewer to show ordering information.
- Done - Returns you to the menu that you selected Help... from.

- Help Viewer:
- The help viewer allows you to view, search, and print the documentation
- for the Software Company Kit. Keyboard controls in the help viewer are as
- follows:
- Up arrow - scroll up.
- Down arrow - scroll down.
- F - Find. Searches for a string you enter. Search begins from the top of
- the help file.
- R - Repeat find. Repeats the last search. Search begins from the last
- match.
- P - Prints the help document to PRN.
- Escape - Exits the help viewer.
